FenaxiZ - Vintage

Toronto emcee (and H3 Family) FenaxiZ just dropped his long-awaited album, Vintage, and it's currently available for free download. The album features some dope production by Amir, Anonymous Twist, Incise, Jobe Wan Kenobi, Quarter Inch Kings, and royceBIRTH, and collaborative artist features from royceBIRTH, August Rigo, US!, JLatte, Dagamuffin, Kris Blade, and Kim Possible.

Vintage is FenaxiZ's first album release in 6 years - this project has been 3 years in the making, and Fen doesn’t disappoint. Listening to this record, it feels like everything that the artist has been building up and keeping inside comes out on this album, ranging on topics from personal life questions and reflections (throughout the album), to re-contextualizing Filipino history (on “White Man’s Burden”), to venting his frustrations after years of grinding in the hip hop game and not getting the love he deserves (“Goodbye To The Game”).

Yes, this album has a vintage feel true to its name, from the intro track with the needle-on-the-record effects and royceBIRTH’s chorus on “Status Update,” to his childhood reminiscing on “Golden Age” and “Can’t Stop Me” (with an incredible old school sample courtesy of Anonymous Twist). This isn't just another throwback album, however; Fen keeps it fresh and downright raw with pure honesty and intensity on these tracks. Vintage is an album relevant to real life struggles that all people deal with and face, voicing the artist's insecurities and fears while at the same time coming with an overwhelming sense of determination and perseverance.

You can read FenaxiZ's own words about the release HERE.

Here's the latest video release to promote the album (video for the title track, "Vintage"):

Mixtape: Nukky Grissom – If At First You Don’t Succeed, Skydiving Is Not For You

Peep the new mixtape from Toronto emcee Nukky Grissom, " If At First You Don’t Succeed, Skydiving Is Not For You." On so focused on success, I'm gonna make it type of content, but there's also a variety of topics touched upon on this project. Free download!

Nukky:

This mixtape is a collection of songs that started out as a “cutting room floor/best of the rest” type thing but quickly evolved as the recording process began. The original project included a few dubs and freestyles but I eventually scrapped those plans and opted to go with completely original material.

The title itself comes with a slice of humour but I chose it more for its paradoxical irony and backwards truth more than anything else. In other words, the title means “if you want to remain unsuccessful, don’t take risks” and as any successful person will tell you, risk is a prerequisite for success. You’ve heard it before: nothing ventured, nothing gained. You get out what you put in. The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward.

This project is about taking that risk and overcoming the fears and doubts associated with taking that leap of faith. I’m at a point in my life where I’ve come to terms with who I am, both as an artist and as a person, and I’m finally comfortable putting it all out there. You don’t have to like it but you have to respect it. Enjoy...

Musiv Video: Relic - Work Of Heart

Multi-talented Toronto emcee Relic just dropped his official (cameo-tastic) video for his new single, "Work of Heart," which is going to be on his upcoming album, Miles To Go. Self-written, produced, mixed, etc. This is that real hip hop with HEART:

Album: Blackboltt - "Leader of the Opposition"

Came across a very high quality recent Canadian hip hop release: "Leader of the Oppostition" by Blackboltt. The whole album sounds very polished and professional (in large part due to mixing by Fresh Kils and Muneshine and mastering by Atomix Studios). Production throughout is very boombastic, in your face type of music (courtesy of Rich Kidd and Muneshine), which matches Blackboltt's overall sound and delivery. There are some great features on the album (Relic, Rich Kidd, and pHoenix Pagliacci, just to name a few). Blackboltt himself sounds very hungry and determined on this project. It'd be nice to hear him play around with his flows a bit more, and some of the hooks may be a bit obnoxious to the sensibilities of some listeners' ears. Regardless, this project is proper and definitely worth listening to and supporting.

How many thinkers are we here? How many leaders? How many creators? How many innovators?

In an era where imitation breeds success by way of commercialization - how many Canadian artists choose to go against the grain and deliver a powerful message about self-discovery (“Start With Why”), self-reliance (“Grind Over Matter”), but most prominently, self-actualization (“We Don’t Serve Saints”).

Blackboltt is a Calgary-born, Toronto-raised MC committed to creating a sound that’s not only uniquely, but proudly Canadian. Head-nodding basslines, catchy melodies, signature delivery, and conscious messages marinate on the the album which is also the soundtrack for the film of the same name from 1812 Entertainment’s Film Division.

Leader of the Opposition (LOTO) is the genesis of Blackboltt’s message of unity, solidarity and commitment to the hip-hop culture that has inspired many artists before him. In an industry which has spit out more Canadian talent than its digested, Blackboltt’s debut encourages listeners to answer their own questions about conformity, morality, aspirations, subjective reality, and the laws of attraction. Produced by two of Canada’s biggest hip-hop heavyweights: Muneshine and Rich Kidd; and engineered by studio legend Fresh Kils.

LOTO captures the sound of a generation unafraid to ask questions like why am I here? What is my purpose? And most importantly, where is my vote?
