To set off the year, we're proud to be featuring two talented artists who have been grinding on the scene for several years:

royceBIRTH and FenaxiZ
Blending dirty soul-driven production with razor-sharp lyrics, royceBIRTH and FenaxiZ comprise the rap duo Chain City. For eight years, these two have been contributing their own distinct brand of beats, rhymes, and life to Toronto's underground Hip-Hop scene, but as individual artists with their own respective solo careers.

royceBIRTH would make a name for himself providing hard-hitting gritty soundscapes for several of the city's top-notch rhymers while FenaxiZ became known amongst rap connoisseurs for authoring introspective, intricate, and poetic verses. Friends since their high school years, Royce Birth and FenaxiZ would often collaborate on eachother's projects so it was only natural that they would eventually get together for a Chain City EP.

When asked about the group name, FenaxiZ explains, "It's often said that a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link, so we keep that saying in mind when we work. It pushes each of us to come as hard as we possibly can and give it our best." Royce adds, "We also realized that everyone in the industry is connected to eachother. If you've heard about the 6-degrees of separation rule, that number becomes even smaller when applied to the Canadian Hip-Hop industry so we want everyone involved in this scene to recognize that fact and work together towards putting our art out there as a whole."

The Chain City EP is set to drop this year and will feature the single "Ah Yeah" as well as "Substance (feat. MC FÜBB)" and "Born & Raised." And if this project isn't enough to satisfy the heads out there, 2012 will also see the release of Royce Birth's "Cassette" and FenaxiZ' "Vintage" solo albums.

Hip Hop culture manifests through the creative self-expression of individuals who embody its spirit in their respective art forms. This power of spontaneous creativity, the unification of a community for the great purpose that is Hip Hop, happens at The Cypher.

Artists sign up to take part in group performances called cyphers, in which each performer takes a few minutes on the mic and then passes it on to the next performer. All performances occur over music supplied by a live DJ, beat boxer, or producer. There are also a few spots at The Cypher reserved for featured artists to perform their own sets.

The Cypher is a grassroots hip hop event started by MC FÜBB and the Hip Hop Headz (H3) community in downtown Toronto in the summer of 2009. The Cypher is an event where hip hop MCs, DJs, producers, and other artists from around the world come to meet and showcase their talents and skills, and gives them an opportunity to network and create business opportunities. The Cypher is an event designed to keep alive the spirit of spontaneous creativity and showmanship that can occur only in hip hop. The Cypher is an opportunity for various members of the hip hop community to perform, network, build community and have fun.

We understand that times are changing. In order to succeed in any market these days, you must adapt. I guess you can say your first project is looked at as a resume of sorts, which is why we have decided to give you our debut LP for free. In a time where music is disposable, we wanted to produce something memorable. Something with staying power. We definitely feel that we achieved that goal.

We faced many ups and downs while recording this project, including talks of hanging it up and passively letting music fall into the monotonous hole that seems to grow bigger every day. Most of these talks stemmed from us being so passionate about what we put into this record. We knew the chance of it being slept on and looked over among all the top 40, bubblegum music that dominates this industry was high. It is a justified fear, but not one that we felt should stop the process. You know what they say: how can you win if you never try? We pushed. We felt it needed to be heard. There is so much to be said about this album and I hope each of you walks away with something that you relate to. Because at the end of the day, it’s all about connecting. I’m not sure at what point up-and-coming artists felt it was ok to put themselves on a pedestal and not be relatable. We are all in this together ─ either chasing dreams, working thankless jobs, or just trying to find a purpose and truly live for something. We want to thank all of you who purchased the physical album or picked it up on itunes or other digital outlets. We appreciate the love. There is no greater feeling than looking out at a show and seeing people who truly believe in what you are doing. Excellent production (as per usual) from Book and Bronze, dope verses all around - all around great hip hop track and tribute to rap music. The video is...well, it kind of makes you not want to fuck with these guys. Seriously, not sure what the message here is, but here's one interpretation: dope, raw, rugged rap group surviving in the cold, harsh wasteland that is the Music Industry + Hip Hop Scene in general. New NTS project, Used to be Dark (Recoil) coming at the end of the month!

Feeling like Frontiersman, we grew our beards and arrived in Mactier at 7:30pm. Cold as f*ck. 4 hour drive North. Pitch black outside. Cabin smelled like pine and rosé. Dropped our bags, chose our beds, Bronze took the air mattress. Half hour till the NBA Dunk-Off. Donk was geeked. Flat screen, satellite, middle-of-nowhere. Heats on. Lee is lit. Drunk off Timbits. Blake Griffin jumps over a car. Here to shoot a music video.

Eric suggested we charge the equipment. Didn't knock on wood. Inexcusable in a cabin. Power went out. Cold as f*ck. Pitch black inside. Cabin smelled like weed and sulfur. Dropped our plans, went to bed, Bronze froze on the air mattress. 5 hours till daylight. Rosh is lit. Left-over Timbits for breakfast. Last night Blake Griffin jumped over a car. Here to shoot a music video, with Ben to direct. A take on raps pioneers, we planned to wear fur.

The events that followed were captured on camera; 'All of the Above' took place. This is a true story. *No animals were harmed in the making of this video.

Sy-fi, born as a Toronto native, started rapping when he was 12. Grew up listening to hip-hop in its golden age era to groups like Wu-Tang and The Roots, Mobb Deep, Slum Village De La Soul and emcees like Redman, Busta Rhymes, and Nas and more. Sy grew up more as a freestyle emcee that just rapped everywhere, anywhere he went.

Sy moved to Boston at the age of 18 and met Session a emcee producer of Acuta Records. Sy and Session rolled together for a few years but remained solo artists, performing at open mics around the city. Sy joined Acuta and performed with them on a couple shows but never

signed to the label and moved back to Toronto.

After moving back to Toronto he met 2 other solo artists Eso Teriq and Symmetry and formed a group "The Scientists." They put together a few songs and performed at few open mics and shows but couldn't manage to stay together due to life differences. Not much of a song writer, for Sy was an emcee that rhymes more "in the moment" if a Cypher was around you sure likely would find Sy in it. Sy-fi's style is like super hero, comic book, emcee or as De La Soul put it "supa emcee" andtries to be as creatively different as possible.

You're now intuned, into the Sy-fi channel. The mic is the 9 and the rhyme is the ammo. Step up to get blown like candles, strap up get ready to blaze like saddles.

You can look forward to Sy-fi solo career starting to move ahead and hopefully ready to drop an EP sometime in 2012 "Science Park"

Hip Hop culture manifests through the creative self-expression of individuals who embody its spirit in their respective art forms. This power of spontaneous creativity, the unification of a community for the great purpose that is Hip Hop, happens at The Cypher.

Artists sign up to take part in group performances called cyphers, in which each performer takes a few minutes on the mic and then passes it on to the next performer. All performances occur over music supplied by a live DJ, beat boxer, or producer. There are also a few spots at The Cypher reserved for featured artists to perform their own sets.

The Cypher is a grassroots hip hop event started by MC FÜBB and the Hip Hop Headz (H3) community in downtown Toronto in the summer of 2009. The Cypher is an event where hip hop MCs, DJs, producers, and other artists from around the world come to meet and showcase their talents and skills, and gives them an opportunity to network and create business opportunities. The Cypher is an event designed to keep alive the spirit of spontaneous creativity and showmanship that can occur only in hip hop. The Cypher is an opportunity for various members of the hip hop community to perform, network, build community and have fun.

Two days, two nights, two banging tracks. This past summer, Crossword and MC FÜBB (The Cypher, H3/Hip Hop Headz) took a road trip from Toronto to Chicago. While the main focus of the trip was to bring Toronto-based event The Cypher down to the windy city, the two emcees also linked up with studio engineer John Randle at JDR Sounds. The first recording session went so wellthat FÜBB and Cross came back the next day to lay out another track. The end result: the Toronto artists banged out two joints with Chicago artists they'd never met prior.

The products of their collaborations are unleashed in Toronto 2 Chicago (aka #TO2CHI), a hard-hitting double single release that bridges the distance between artists in the two great cities in the name of creating high quality hip hop music. The two track release features Chicago emcee Cada Bug and Toronto's DJ Nef-You on "Casey Anthony," a high-octane track with a murderous beat produced by TO's Justunlimited. Producer/emcee Shake LaBomba rapped on and provided beat for "Not Impressed,” on which all three artists spit diverse flows over a 6/8 timing instrumental (an atypical meter for hip hop music).

In a musical era where monotony and lacklustre quality are commonplace, Toronto 2 Chicago raises the bar by infusing a fresh dose of creative production, original lyricism, distinctive flows and raw hip hop flavour for astute listeners worldwide.

I judge wisely as if nothing ever surprised me, so when I heard there was an opportunity to open for Killah Priest without having to pay out of pocket I said "Cool, I can sell 40 tickets", and I did.

I saw it as an opportunity to add something big on my resume so I didn't mind putting in the leg work, but let me be quite honest ... I believe I shouldn't have to.

Not because I'm a better artist than everyone, not because I rip every microphone I see to shreds, not even because I stand head and shoulder above pretty much every other MC in Toronto, none of that has anything to do with why I shouldn't be selling tickets to an event I am performing.

Heres why : CUZ I'M A RAPPER NOT A PROMOTER

Would you ask a dentist to cut your hair or a barber to fill your cavity. No you wouldn't and if you did that dentist would loose credibility as a dentist and the barber as a barber. Stop doing this to artist. Let us create and be artist. Promoter need to fill these places based on the sole fact the audience is going to see a good show. Artists can not be responsible for bring crowds because who that artist brings only has vested interest in the artist they came with.

If I were living in NYC - or any other self respecting city that isn't named Toronto, the Killah Priest show would be sold out before they even put my name on the bill as an opening act. But its a little different here in the Big Smoke we show support to our talent a little differntly here.

Do not take this entry out of context ! I respect I Respect Music because they put in work and make things happen. They have talented artists and a CEO who's business accumen and work ethic is incredible. The IRM Movement to me is one of the more established, successful and unique organizations within the Hip Hop community in T.O. which is why I jumped at the opportunity to work with them, but I don't agree with any form of Pay to Play because it makes the artist vulnerable. But I did it because I have to. They set it up this way because they have to. Things just work differently here.

In my opinion the artist should be sought out, not only as the main event but also as the opener. Otherwise you have a situation where there will be less talented artists performing at shows where they really have no right to be performing because they can pay to play They may suck but because they can sell 40 tickets or pay 500 bucks they're in the show.

Promoters, Hosts, Record Labels etc do your self a favour and seek out truly talented artists that deserve to be in shows based on their talent not what they are willing to do. Invest in these artist not yourselves and you will see a greater return I promise you because your shows won't suck. I am guilty of being an artist who was willing to pay to play (or willing to sell tickets in this case, cuz when they asked me to open for Freeway for like $500 bucks I said Hell No) because I needed to be in a show of this magnitude. That was my only option because I live in Skrewface Capital and we have no one who is willing to put themselves on the line so someone else can shine.

Problem Number 2 is - if the first opening act brought 25 people and they leave when the first act is done and the second act brings 35 and they leave when the second act is done and this pattern continues until the main event then how many people will be let in the venue when that time comes. Its sad. Especially when those acts aren't really good to begin with.

I am not going to say this is what happened at the Killah Priest show, but I am also not going to say this didn't happen at the Killah Priest show. All I am saying is when you rely on artist to do your promotion it can be a good thing and a bad thing. Its just a thing - a thing that needs to be scrutinized and reevaluted if we want Hip Hop to benefit everyone.

Since following up “the album” with his first solo offering, 2006’s“sample surgery”, junia t has been everywhere, collaborating with anyone willing, emerging as one of Toronto’s most skilled emcee/producers. The finalists for tonight's Ultimate MC Toronto Semi-Final have been selected and the battle is on! The finalists are: Charron, Diaz, Kaliente, Lokust, Po Rich, Q, Sinotra, and White Fang.

H3 got it's money on White Fang FTW!

8 MCs from four Canadian cities (Toronto, Calgary, Montreal, and Vancouver) will be competing in individual semi-finals, after which the winner from each city will compete for $5000 + a Record deal with CP Records!

The event is supposed to be "Freestyle Off The Top" in terms of battle-types (i.e. no pre-written verses)...so we'll see how much actual freestyling takes place! Here's hoping that the guest judges, Royce 5'9 (Shady Records), Organik (King of the Dot), and Cash (CP Records) will take freestyling ability and versatility into account in judging the battles.

New Monthly Event, The Cypher, is Filling the Void in Toronto’s Hip Hop Community

Toronto-born organization, Hip Hop Headz (H3), is determined to build a permanent monument on the GTA’s hip hop landscape.

“Hip Hop culture manifests through the creative self-expression of individuals who embody its spirit in their respective art forms. This power of spontaneous creativity, the unification of a community for the great purpose that is Hip Hop, happens at The Cypher.” – H3

Toronto, ON – Feb. 2, 2011 – The main goal of The Cypher is to preserve and contribute to the expression of hip hop’s fundamental elements by allowing local artists to showcase their unique talents and skills. Any artist who shows up has the opportunity to perform in cyphers, which are literally a circle of MCs/rappers each taking a few minutes on the mic, either freestyling or reciting written verses, and then passing it on to the next performer. All MCs get the opportunity to perform along-side each other regardless of skill level or amount of experience, a feature of The Cypher which levels the playing field for artists while still allowing the most talented performers an opportunity to stand out and be recognized. To date, over a hundred artists have participated in The Cypher from the GTA and beyond. While primarily started as an MC-focused event, The Cypher has evolved to more equally emphasize other hip hop elements such as DJing, beat-boxing, live instrumental production, and is expanding to get the involvement of the break-dancing community.

Lack of cohesion, lack of support, lack of unity – these terms are just a few of the descriptors that fit the view of many artists in Toronto’s hip hop community. Specifically for young MCs/rappers – an abundance of which has created an over-saturated market – Toronto can be a difficult environment for artists looking to perform, shine, and have their voices heard. It is partially in response to these unmet needs thatHip Hop Headz (H3) (an organization founded by local artist MC FÜBB) created The Cypher – a monthly event that gives any artist who shows up and opportunity to perform, network, practice and master their craft.

There are also a few spots reserved at The Cypher for featured artists to perform their own sets; featured artists have included Toronto nativeMindbender (Urbnet Records), Durham Region’s Sha Prince and Flex (aka The Antiheroes, 9-0 Nickel Entertainement), and numerous other local acts. All cyphers occur over music supplied by a live DJ spinning hip hop instrumentals; featured DJs have included Toronto legend DJ Grouch (Turnstylez DJ Crew, Scratchlab Institute). Local producers also have an opportunity to have their music played at The Cypher; up and coming Toronto artist Rich Kidd (production credits for Billy Danze feat. Busta Rhymes, Frank n Dank, Saukrates, K-OS, and dozens more) was recently featured and showcased his beats for MCs to rap over.

The Cypher takes place on the second Wednesday of every month at Augusta House (152a Augusta Avenue). The next instalment of The Cypher takes place on Weds. Feb. 9 and is featuring DJ P-Plus (Flow 93.5 – The Real Frequency, appearances on BET, MuchMusic, P3 Entertainment).

Emerging from solo artists, Chief 4syt, Primordial and former members conceived the idea of a versatile group of emcees that would work as a team, & as individual artists.Within Faction, studying various ways to play on words, and the multiple variations of themes created the possibilities to fuse their conscious styles.After seeing the success of the first CD release, (Pulp Faction) It was clear that this was not going to be their last album.

Collaborating with numerous artists such as Daxflow and D-sisive, his skills and reputation have been rapidly improving. Recently forming the new group "Anti-Heroes" with 9-0-nickel artist Flex and releasing the single + music video for "Circus Clowns," the duo are currently working on an album together. Whether you're in a crew or solo, this is the time and place to bust out your skills and represent. The floor (i.e. cardboard/linoleum) is open to whoever can rock it. Come and show off your style, network, learn, share and be part of a new community. Stardance is the perfect place for dancers of all genres, and of all skill levels, to practice, show off their skills, get feedback, and build connections in the community.

The Cypher is a grassroots hip hop event started by MC FÜBB, DJ Combo and the Hip Hop Headz (H3) community in downtown Toronto in the summer of 2009. The Cypher is an event where hip hop MCs, DJs, producers, and other artists from around the city come to meet and showcase their talents and skills, and gives them an opportunity to network and create business opportunities. The Cypher is an event designed to keep alive the spirit of spontaneous creativity and showmanship that can occur only in hip hop. The Cypher is an opportunity for various members of the hip hop community to perform, network, build community and have fun.

Since 1996, Adhimu "Mindbender" Stewart has consistently created a completely new definition of MC, every single time he rhymes into a mic. Quietly but confidently, Mindbender has been trailblazing a higher standard for creativity in Canadian hip hop and MCing in general ever since. In case you need a bit of a history lesson, these are some of his more recent accomplishments: in 2006, Mindbender completed "The Invisible Rhythm Showcase", his long-awaited experimental acapella album, and "No More Mr. Fucking Nice Guy Volume 2: The Blasphemy Masterpiece" concept mixtape/album, which are both the official follow-up releases to the critically-acclaimed double CD "Beautiful Mutant". He followed that with "Better Late Than Never Made" EP, as well as "Invisible Rhythm Showcase" (both on Urbnet Records), an experimental acapella album. In 2010, you can find Mindbender on the new Supreme Being Unit album with rhyme partner Conspiracy, called "In Space, No One Can Hear You Rhyme", as well as a collaboration album with Micill Shazaam Write called "Obeah".

And last but definitely not least, Mindbender has just released his album "Jupiter", featuring music exclusively created by Rich Kidd (producer for Drake, Saukrates, k-os, Busta Rhymes, M.O.P., and many more). After a mutual respect for each other's one-of-a-kind artistry and unlimited passion for making next level hip hop, they met up in the summer of 2009, where furious freestyle ciphers and creative chemistry inspired the idea for a collaboration project. The highly-anticipated album was recently released in July 2010, officially launched with a successful Ontario tour as opening act for Rhymesayers living legend Abstract Rude. "Jupiter" is what Mindbender believes is the work most capable of taking him to unprecedented levels of success around the world, as its unrestricted ambition and intense commitment to creativity shines in every one of its 25 tracks of Canadian edutainment. Whether you are new to Mindbender music or have been listening since 1996, we invite you to witness music history in the making, and take a trip to "Jupiter".

THE CYPHER

Hip Hop culture manifests through the creative self-expression of individuals who embody its spirit in their respective art forms. This power of spontaneous creativity, the unification of a community for the great purpose that is Hip Hop, happens at The Cypher.

Artists sign up to take part in group performances called cyphers, in which each performer takes a few minutes on the mic and then passes it on to the next performer. All performances occur over music supplied by a live DJ spinning hip hop instrumentals. Local producers also have an opportunity to have their music played at The Cypher and rapped over by the performing artists. There are also a few spots at The Cypher reserved for featured artists to perform their own sets.
