Steely Chan - Left of the Golden Era

New mix from production duo Steely Chan, fusion of funk and golden-era hip hop. Peep the free download HERE.

Left of the Golden Era is the fourth mixtape release of Steely Chan, a production duo from Vancouver but currently based in Toronto. Every week we release a new remix available for free download. Our music is steeped in the source material of hip hop beat culture: heavy funk, soul, jazz, dub reggae, disco, psych rock, electronica, freak folk, brazillian pop, afrobeat & world music. In other words, any and all musics with strong rhythm and a healthy dose of funk.

Our latest compilation is another foray into mashup culture. Left of the Golden Era is a fusion of golden era hip hop with the heavy, raw funk sound of Dutch outfit, Lefties Soul Connection. The result is a throwback to a late ‘80s and early ‘90s hip hop aesthetic where James Brown funk samples and big drums were the sonic zeitgeist. However, everything old is “now again”. We think this new reinterpretation will appeal to a contemporary audience who discovered their groove via the nu funk resurgence.

Track Listing:

1. Mobb Deep & Lefties Soul Connection - Shook Ones Chop It
2. The Beatnuts & Lefties Soul Connection - Props Over Bam Bam
3. Das EFX & Lefties Soul Connection - Real Paul Newman Hip Hop
4. Nas & Lefties Soul Connection - Hard to Sling Shot
5. Pete Rock, CL Smooth & Lefties Soul Connection - They Reminisce Over Sling Shot
6. East Flatbush Project & Lefties Soul Connection - Tried By Bouncing Ball
7. Black Moon & Lefties Soul Connection - How Many Welly Wagging MCs
8. Tim Dog & Lefties Soul Connection - Bronx Fais Do Do

Brown Bag AllStars feat. Akie Bermiss "Say It Now" (prod. by J57)

These guys are so dope:

Audible Doctor - "I Think That..." EP

Emcee/produce The Audible Doctor (Brown Bag Allstars crew) has been dropping "leaks" of tracks from this project for a few months, and now it's finally here, his EP "I Think That..." This is a thoroughly high quality album - great production, catchy hooks, dope emceeing and ill lyricism. For an "EP," this thing is 11 tracks! The entire EP can be streamed and downloaded for free below. Check it!

Words from the man himself:

Hollywood Adom - "3 Kings Freestyle"

Here's an upbeat verse from Toronto rapper Hollywood Adom. My favourite line is, "these n*ggas couldn't walk a whole day in my pantalon."

F.E.L.N. - SLPWLKR

Scarborough emcee F.E.L.N. just released his new album, SLPWLKR. If you like gritty, underground, raw hip hop music, then take in this album, and cop it at a price of your choosing. Gaze into the mind of a man dealing with his own breakdowns, breakthroughs, and triumph over his own demons...

 S.insL.oveP.owerW.omenL.ifeK.nowledgeR.evenge..

This album is a culmination of experiences over the last two years, my feelings and reactions to situations that my chaotic life has been flung into.

During the creation of this album, I had what I thought was everything - lost every part of it, and have been shown the way to regain it more effectively.

This album is more than music to me, it is a two way journey. A lock and key, a gateway to my wants and needs, a window to my wins and losses, my highs and lows.

Heartbreak to victory. Good times and bad. These are the tales of a man who lived his dreams and stuck to them when they became his nightmares.

- F.E.L.N.

The Antiheroes - 6 Degrees feat. Sugar Tongue Slim

New single from The Antiheroes feat. Sugar Tongue Slim off their forthcoming album, Modern Day Riot. Dope-sauce.

Relic - Miles to Go

T-Dot/B-Town emcee, producer, singer, audio engineer RELIC has just dropped his new album, Miles to Go, and after a few listens I can confidently say this is a thoroughly solid album. Stay tuned for a more in-depth review, but for now listen to the album and if you're feeling it, cop it - you can tell just by listening that a ton of hard work has gone into this project.

RELIC Raises The Bar With Self Made New Release

If being a "Triple threat" is an ace in the hole for most performers, then RELIC aka Rel McCoy is about to show the world how dangerous he really is. The Toronto based hip-hop guru can list Emcee, DJ, Producer, Engineer and Singer to his credits, all of which he showcases on his latest album Miles To Go. It's an undertaking few can pull off, let alone take credit for, but the evidence of his ability to combine these talents with a deft touch can be heard in spades on this stunning release that combines old-school melodies and intense rhymes with breakneck speed.

A Juno Award producer listed on Shad's winning album, RELIC is making a name for himself as the total package in Canadian hip-hop. Out on September 11th, Miles To Go is a full length he opted to (get ready for it) write, record, produce and mix entirely on his own. The result is an album where nothing sounds calculated or forced; there's a natural attention to rhythm that allows tracks like the funk-influenced "Out of the Blue" or the inspired and courageous "Action Figure" (in which he gives props to Steve Nash) to adapt to every situation.

"What I like most about his style is that his approach to production and rapping is always true to the essence of hip hop but still inventive in subtle and surprising ways, and above that, his content is sincere and relatable." - SHAD

This is not hip-hop with an edge just for the sake of having an edge. It's RELIC recounting the stories of his life which brought him to where he is today. The opening 1-2 punch of "Gone Clear" and "Nobody Like You" showcase how easily his introspective lyrics can be related to by all fans of hip-hop. They're stories for all to hear, enjoy and bring forth their own perspective.

Though RELIC did manage to create Miles To Go on his own, he wasn't too proud to allow his friends into the studio and put their touches on the album. He invited the aforementioned Shad along with Ghettosocks in for "Down and Dirty," Brotha Soul for "The Extra Mile" and Mr. J. Medeiros on "The Valley." This was an important move as he sought to maintain the personal relationships he has with these artists.

Miles To Go features an honest and soulful approach where RELIC embodies the bold and vulnerable spirit of hip-hop culture.

Music Video: Brother Ali - Mourning in America

Brother Ali's latest release, the title track from his upcoming album, Mourning in America and Dreaming in Colour, is intense. The music and the images speak for themselves. He'll be performing in Toronto on Sept. 30, 2012 at the Annex Wreckroom.

Pre-order the album: http://bit.ly/NbZfxY
Buy song on iTunes: http://bit.ly/PmIHSV
Album in stores 9/18. Produced by Jake One.

This is the title track to my new album, Mourning in America and Dreaming in Color. The first half of the album highlights and critiques the dire situation in which we live. The second half outlines the tremendous opportunity we have to re-imagine and reform our society. This song is an observation and a critique of our culture of death and murder. From actual war zones around the world to our own inner cities where this summer's death rates rival war zones. I also address our national hypocrisy regarding violence. We have a zero tolerance policy of violence committed against us, but we're a lot more lenient and patient when it comes to the violence we commit. "A life is a life and a killer is a killer". -Brother Ali

Es - Feud for Thought

I somehow just found out about Mississauga emcee Es, even though he's been doing the damn thang since 1991! Met him at the Big Mic TO show this past Tuseday, unfortunately missed his set, but he hailed me up on FB and sent me the link for his most recent album, Feud for Thought. Intelligent lyricism? Check. Complex flows? Check. Originality. Yup. Es is an all around dope hip hop emcee, and this album is sick.

“Feud For Thought” is a collection of my thoughts which illustrate my views on what is hurting this culture, music and community that I love. This beautiful forum of expression is being exploited for capital gain at the expense of the impressionable minds of the youth. Hip hop is much more than the one dimensional imagery depicted in various mainstream media. The entire story isn't being told. The industry powers- that-be would rather force-feed the masses watered-down, dumbed-down rubbish than evoke thought, knowledge of self, introspection, messages of love, peace and respect. They will have you believe that hip hop is supposed to look and sound a certain way. A bunch of cookie-cutter mass produced cloning has negatively impacted the creative element of the music. My war is with the media brainwashing. My feud isn't necessarily with the clones themselves. My feud is with the “puppet masters” controlling minds and insulting the intelligence of the masses. The dumber they make us, the more money we put into their pockets. Let's fight for mental freedom. Let's fight for creativity and originality. Let's “Feud For Thought”.

Peace.

MC FÜBB - Another Rapper

Tired of being looked over, shrugged off, and brushed to the side by the music industry, media sources, and even his own peers, MC FÜBB felt it necessary to vent his frustrations on his last album, In the Face of No Agreement (aka ITFONA). In anticipation of his upcoming EP, the poet, FÜBB teamed up with Evan Ciniello (StreetCar Creative) to release a video for his spoken word/acapella rap piece "Another Rapper" (which appears on ITFONA).

"I wrote 'Another Rapper' as part of a process in which I was getting out a lot of my internal struggles and frustrations, which was sort of the personal theme of ITFONA for me," says FÜBB. "I wanted to explicitly show and prove to people why I'm not just another rapper out of the millions of rappers in the world. People might wonder, 'why should I pay attention to you? What makes you special or different than everyone else?' 'Another Rapper' is my answer to those questions."

The video for "Another Rapper" is the first in a series of spoken word/acapella rap videos that MC FÜBB will be releasing before the poet EP drops in late 2012.

"Another Rapper" is featured as track #7 on MC FÜBB's album, "In the Face of No Agreement," produced exclusively by Noyz (http://mcfubb.bandcamp.com/album/in-the-face-of-no-agreement-lp).

FenaxiZ - Vintage

Toronto emcee (and H3 Family) FenaxiZ just dropped his long-awaited album, Vintage, and it's currently available for free download. The album features some dope production by Amir, Anonymous Twist, Incise, Jobe Wan Kenobi, Quarter Inch Kings, and royceBIRTH, and collaborative artist features from royceBIRTH, August Rigo, US!, JLatte, Dagamuffin, Kris Blade, and Kim Possible.

Vintage is FenaxiZ's first album release in 6 years - this project has been 3 years in the making, and Fen doesn’t disappoint. Listening to this record, it feels like everything that the artist has been building up and keeping inside comes out on this album, ranging on topics from personal life questions and reflections (throughout the album), to re-contextualizing Filipino history (on “White Man’s Burden”), to venting his frustrations after years of grinding in the hip hop game and not getting the love he deserves (“Goodbye To The Game”).

Yes, this album has a vintage feel true to its name, from the intro track with the needle-on-the-record effects and royceBIRTH’s chorus on “Status Update,” to his childhood reminiscing on “Golden Age” and “Can’t Stop Me” (with an incredible old school sample courtesy of Anonymous Twist). This isn't just another throwback album, however; Fen keeps it fresh and downright raw with pure honesty and intensity on these tracks. Vintage is an album relevant to real life struggles that all people deal with and face, voicing the artist's insecurities and fears while at the same time coming with an overwhelming sense of determination and perseverance.

You can read FenaxiZ's own words about the release HERE.

Here's the latest video release to promote the album (video for the title track, "Vintage"):

Mixtape: Nukky Grissom – If At First You Don’t Succeed, Skydiving Is Not For You

Peep the new mixtape from Toronto emcee Nukky Grissom, " If At First You Don’t Succeed, Skydiving Is Not For You." On so focused on success, I'm gonna make it type of content, but there's also a variety of topics touched upon on this project. Free download!

Nukky:

This mixtape is a collection of songs that started out as a “cutting room floor/best of the rest” type thing but quickly evolved as the recording process began. The original project included a few dubs and freestyles but I eventually scrapped those plans and opted to go with completely original material.

The title itself comes with a slice of humour but I chose it more for its paradoxical irony and backwards truth more than anything else. In other words, the title means “if you want to remain unsuccessful, don’t take risks” and as any successful person will tell you, risk is a prerequisite for success. You’ve heard it before: nothing ventured, nothing gained. You get out what you put in. The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward.

This project is about taking that risk and overcoming the fears and doubts associated with taking that leap of faith. I’m at a point in my life where I’ve come to terms with who I am, both as an artist and as a person, and I’m finally comfortable putting it all out there. You don’t have to like it but you have to respect it. Enjoy...

The Cypher - 3 Year Anniversary Promo Video

The 3 year anniversary of H3's own monthly hip hop event THE CYPHER is going down on July 19 at The Central in Toronto. Here's a little promo video for it:

Musiv Video: Relic - Work Of Heart

Multi-talented Toronto emcee Relic just dropped his official (cameo-tastic) video for his new single, "Work of Heart," which is going to be on his upcoming album, Miles To Go. Self-written, produced, mixed, etc. This is that real hip hop with HEART:

Album: Blackboltt - "Leader of the Opposition"

Came across a very high quality recent Canadian hip hop release: "Leader of the Oppostition" by Blackboltt. The whole album sounds very polished and professional (in large part due to mixing by Fresh Kils and Muneshine and mastering by Atomix Studios). Production throughout is very boombastic, in your face type of music (courtesy of Rich Kidd and Muneshine), which matches Blackboltt's overall sound and delivery. There are some great features on the album (Relic, Rich Kidd, and pHoenix Pagliacci, just to name a few). Blackboltt himself sounds very hungry and determined on this project. It'd be nice to hear him play around with his flows a bit more, and some of the hooks may be a bit obnoxious to the sensibilities of some listeners' ears. Regardless, this project is proper and definitely worth listening to and supporting.

How many thinkers are we here? How many leaders? How many creators? How many innovators?

In an era where imitation breeds success by way of commercialization - how many Canadian artists choose to go against the grain and deliver a powerful message about self-discovery (“Start With Why”), self-reliance (“Grind Over Matter”), but most prominently, self-actualization (“We Don’t Serve Saints”).

Blackboltt is a Calgary-born, Toronto-raised MC committed to creating a sound that’s not only uniquely, but proudly Canadian. Head-nodding basslines, catchy melodies, signature delivery, and conscious messages marinate on the the album which is also the soundtrack for the film of the same name from 1812 Entertainment’s Film Division.

Leader of the Opposition (LOTO) is the genesis of Blackboltt’s message of unity, solidarity and commitment to the hip-hop culture that has inspired many artists before him. In an industry which has spit out more Canadian talent than its digested, Blackboltt’s debut encourages listeners to answer their own questions about conformity, morality, aspirations, subjective reality, and the laws of attraction. Produced by two of Canada’s biggest hip-hop heavyweights: Muneshine and Rich Kidd; and engineered by studio legend Fresh Kils.

LOTO captures the sound of a generation unafraid to ask questions like why am I here? What is my purpose? And most importantly, where is my vote?

Stoli DJ Cypher Series - 4-Man Turntablism Mix - "We Will Rock You"

What happens when you take some of the best hip hop DJs in Toronto - scratch that (no pun intended) - some of the best hip hop DJs in the world, and have them collaborate in a 4-man DJ cypher? You get absolute epic epicness (yeah, that's a word now). Big ups to DJ Grouch and D-Scratch of the Turnstylez Crew and Thera-P and Riccachet from the Sweet Touch Foundation. Just watch and listen:

While DJs play records and good DJs can mix them seamlessly for hours, turntablists deconstruct records, cutting, scratching, beat-juggling and cross-fading new sounds into new songs along the way. Taking its cue from hip hop, where emcees have been battling and collaborating in cyphers since the early days of freestyle, Stolichnaya is proud to drop the first of its brand new DJ Cypher series. Witness Toronto's DJ Grouch and D-Scratch of the legendary (world champion!) Turnstylez Crew and Thera-P and Riccachet from Sweet Touch Foundation join forces and produce a truly original composition worthy of the world's most original vodka. Like what you're hearing? Come back often for more innovative DJ Cypher mixes courtesy of Stoli.

Agency: Oxygen Design Agency, Director/Editor: Reza Dahya, DOP: James Hellyer, Producer: Rinku DasGupta.

Shot on location at Get Spun in Toronto, ON.

FenaxiZ feat. JLatte - White Man's Burden

T-Dot emcee FenaxiZ just released a very powerful, raw, and brutally honest video + track called "White Man's Burden" off his upcoming LP, Vintage. Over some entrancing guitar strumming by JLatte and beat by Quarter Inch Kings, FenaxiZ speaks on many hard to swallow truths about Filipino history as well as his views on the current state of his community both in the Philippines and in Toronto. "White Man's Burden" is an unapologetic, unflinching view of the effects that colonialism, 2 World Wars, corrupt police and government officials and modern day racism have had and continue to have on the Filipino population. I have only one small beef with the title: colonialism of the Phillipines was first done by Spain...they shoulder some of the burden, don't they? This track + video is not for the faint of heart:

Every June 12, Filipinos across the globe commemorate their homeland's declaration of independence from Spanish occupation in 1898. Amidst the lumpia, tinikling dances, and street parades, FenaxiZ humbly entreats his kasamas worldwide to pause for a moment of reflection and acknowledge a past mired with bloodshed, subjugation, and resistance.

Borrowing its title from the Rudyard Kipling poem about the Filipino-American war, "White Man's Burden" is a critical analysis of the widespread effects that imperialism has wreaked upon a 7000-island archipelago once known as "The Pearl Of The Orient." From a Labour Export Policy that seperates parents from children to the internalized racism that fuels identity issues of the youth, FenaxiZ covers many pressing issues that today's Filipinos face; yet, he is also aware of the incomplete picture he paints as he muses, "and this rap ain't even scratching the surface of our collective experience."

FenaxiZ states, "To properly capture 600 years of a country's history in a 5 minute song is impossible, but I hope my words can mobilize my audience to walk away with a desire to educate themselves on the issues. I want us to truly think about our current situation, discuss amongst ourselves, and question if we are, in fact, an independent republic. If my lyrics can instill some pride and provide a stepping stone to a Filipino youth's journey of understanding his or her identity, then I've done my job."

And while the image may be bleak, FenaxiZ adds, "If history has taught us anything, it is that Filipinos are survivors; we are a resilient people. From Lapu-Lapu to the People Power Revolution, Filipinos have resisted oppression from internal and external forces and we will continue to do so until we take our rightful place as a respected, self-sufficient, first-class prosperous nation. It may not happen in my lifetime or the next, but it will happen one day."

"White Man's Burden" is produced by The Quarter Inch Kings and features Joshua "JLatte" Lopez on guitar. It will appear on the upcoming FenaxiZ album Vintage, slated for a July 2012 release.

Music Video: Wordsworth - Coloring Book feat. Meleni Smith

Check this fresh new video from Brooklyn's own Wordsworth feat. vocals by Meleni Smith. The visuals in this video are extremely vibrant (as the song title suggests) and Wordsworth displays his lyrical mastery using the "colours" theme to tell stories about everyday life in Brooklyn, all done with his signature vocal tone and intricate flows. "Coloring Book" is a single off of Wordsworth's recently released album, Photo Album. Some uplifting hip hop music for a change, without dumming down on the realness of the content...enjoy!

SepTO - Nevera Evera

Check out SepTO's new for the first track off his Allergy Pills and Alcohol mixtape:

Sep is a seriously talented emcee. Unfortunately, as is often the case with emerging artists in big cities like Toronto, his music is being way too slept on! Check him out. Download his mixtape for free. Spread the word.

Here's some words from the artist himself:

"In short, it has been an amazing year. “Allergy Pills and Alcohol” was released on May 29th of 2011. The support and opportunities received since then have been a profound blessing to me. I appreciate you all so much. Me and my team now stand at a point of major transition. Its time to move forward from our past accomplishments and into a new era of success. For now, let’s mark this moment with the international release of Nevera Evera, the intro to AP&A and obvious crowd favourite. You can find it on iTunes. I intend on continuing to keep my city proud. Thank you Thank you Thank you. Support Appreciated.
See you in July…."
