Music Video + Single: Crossword - Quality Control feat. L the 12th Letter & MC FÜBB

Remember when hip hop music was about high quality raps, creative beats, original lyrics? Remember when being respected as a rapper required some real TALENT and SKILL? Remember when hip hop was FUN?!? Each of the Toronto emcees in this video, Crossword, L the 12th Letter, and MC FÜBB brings their own unique style and flavour to this track, over a sweet beat provided by CJ Beatz (NYC). The video is entertaining and down-right hilarious at times, with great direction by Jason Matos. Warning to all half-assed rappers - you might just get the "WACK" stamp:

In the video for "Quality Control," directed by Jason Matos, the trio roam the T-dot streets in search of the real. They encounter a number of spitters that simply don't make the cut, and combat them with insightful lyrics, provocative flows and passionate deliveries. Wack emcees will be graded, written up, stamped down and aired out, not to mention have their girls taken from them. The moral of the story? Don't be a lame. Crossword, L the 12th Letter and MC FÜBB will call you out on it all day.

THE CYPHER - Holiday Edition

This month is the HOLIDAY EDITION of THE CYPHER! We're featuring the live production + emceeing duo of Juno Nominated producer Fresh Kils and veteran MC Relic, as well as Scarborough-native freestyle master Sy Fi.

In the spirit of giving, we're also supporting the Daily Bread Food Bank, so please bring a canned/non-perishable food donation to help some hungry people in our city (and get reduced cover on door!).

From behind the boards to the stage, there’s not a spot of ground Fresh Kils’ prolific career hasn’t touched. And not just hip hop. It’s true, you’ll see Saigon, Fabolous and Ali Shaheed (ATCQ) grace his resume, but you’ll also find the likes of Ron Sexsmith & The Buena Vista Social Club. His prowess on the MPC has seen him share the stage with many of hip hop’s legends (Nas, De La Soul) as well as the best of the underground, winning over fans with his signature showmanship. With momentum & accolades growing each year, Fresh Kils’ is poised for a sound system takeover unlike any we’ve seen in a long time. You’ve been warned…

RELIC aka REL McCoy - Emcee, Producer, D.J., Singer/songwriter, Engineer... Lover of all that is Hip Hop..
" Fighting with the shadows been a hassle for me letting my past go / I ain't looking back to the sad road / I'm burning my hands on the rope, holding my future with a lasso / plus, it's been a struggle trying to kick this tobacco " - REL

and

Sy-Fi

S, For Science. Y, try to challenge this. F, for futuristic. I, for intelligence.

Sy-fi, born as a Toronto native, started rapping when he was 12. Grew up listening to hip-hop in its golden age era to groups like Wu-Tang and The Roots, Mobb Deep, Slum Village De La Soul and emcees like Redman, Busta Rhymes, and Nas and more. Sy grew up more as a freestyle emcee that just rapped everywhere, anywhere he went.

Sy moved to Boston at the age of 18 and met Session a emcee producer of Acuta Records. Sy and Session rolled together for a few years but remained solo artists, performing at open mics around the city. Sy joined Acuta and performed with them on a couple shows but never
signed to the label and moved back to Toronto.

After moving back to Toronto he met 2 other solo artists Eso Teriq and Symmetry and formed a group "The Scientists." They put together a few songs and performed at few open mics and shows but couldn't manage to stay together due to life differences. Not much of a song writer, for Sy was an emcee that rhymes more "in the moment" if a Cypher was around you sure likely would find Sy in it. Sy-fi's style is like super hero, comic book, emcee or as De La Soul put it "supa emcee" andtries to be as creatively different as possible.

You're now intuned, into the Sy-fi channel. The mic is the 9 and the rhyme is the ammo. Step up to get blown like candles, strap up get ready to blaze like saddles.

You can look forward to Sy-fi solo career starting to move ahead and hopefully ready to drop an EP sometime in 2012 "Science Park"

Hip Hop culture manifests through the creative self-expression of individuals who embody its spirit in their respective art forms. This power of spontaneous creativity, the unification of a community for the great purpose that is Hip Hop, happens at The Cypher.

Artists sign up to take part in group performances called cyphers, in which each performer takes a few minutes on the mic and then passes it on to the next performer. All performances occur over music supplied by a live DJ, beat boxer, or producer. There are also a few spots at The Cypher reserved for featured artists to perform their own sets.

The Cypher is a grassroots hip hop event started by MC FÜBB and the Hip Hop Headz (H3) community in downtown Toronto in the summer of 2009. The Cypher is an event where hip hop MCs, DJs, producers, and other artists from around the world come to meet and showcase their talents and skills, and gives them an opportunity to network and create business opportunities. The Cypher is an event designed to keep alive the spirit of spontaneous creativity and showmanship that can occur only in hip hop. Double Single Release: Crossword and MC FÜBB - Toronto 2 Chicago

New heatery from H3 artists Crossword and MC FÜBB feat. artists Cada Bug and Shake LaBomba from Chicago. Check more info below!

Two days, two nights, two banging tracks. This past summer, Crossword and MC FÜBB (The Cypher, H3/Hip Hop Headz) took a road trip from Toronto to Chicago. While the main focus of the trip was to bring Toronto-based event The Cypher down to the windy city, the two emcees also linked up with studio engineer John Randle at JDR Sounds. The first recording session went so well that FÜBB and Cross came back the next day to lay out another track. The end result: the Toronto artists banged out two joints with Chicago artists they'd never met prior.

The products of their collaborations are unleashed in Toronto 2 Chicago (aka #TO2CHI), a hard-hitting double single release that bridges the distance between artists in the two great cities in the name of creating high quality hip hop music. The two track release features Chicago emcee Cada Bug and Toronto's DJ Nef-You on "Casey Anthony," a high-octane track with a murderous beat produced by TO's Justunlimited. Producer/emcee Shake LaBomba rapped on and provided beat for "Not Impressed,” on which all three artists spit diverse flows over a 6/8 timing instrumental (an atypical meter for hip hop music).

In a musical era where monotony and lacklustre quality are commonplace, Toronto 2 Chicago raises the bar by infusing a fresh dose of creative production, original lyricism, distinctive flows and raw hip hop flavour for astute listeners worldwide.
Artists: Crossword and MC FÜBB

Project: “Toronto 2 Chicago” (#TO2CHI) – Double Single Release

Song 1: “Casey Anthony” feat. Cada Bug (prod. by Justunlimited; cuts by DJ Nef-You)

Song 2: “Not Impressed” feat. Shake LaBomba (prod. by Shake LaBomba)

Recorded by John Randle at JDR Sounds (@JAYRAN20).
Mixed and mastered by Phame at GameTyme Studio (@PhameOne).
Project cover art design by Olivia Allen (@liv_allen).

Music Video: Notes to Self - Nobody feat. Evidence

Very creative idea and excellent editing job for the new Notes to Self video for "Nobody" featuring Evidence.  Sick track, nostalgic video. Nnnnnnnnnnnnotes to self!

Notes to Self returns with the second video from their upcoming project "Used to Dark [RECOIL]."  Notes and Ev hopped in the DeLorean and made a video with all their favourite rappers. You have to see it to believe it.

--  Remember back back in the day when you had that 1 Homie who would video tape & record every rap video on TV, or every rap show on the radio? Fast forward 15 years, the Homie has a box of 30 or so VHS cassette tapes sittin dusty in a drawer with things like "Rap City", "Summer Jam", "The Box", "In Da Round" scrolled on the side of'em in some youthful hand styles fit for a wall or 2 - and you're like, I need to watch these, takes you back, rappin along with every word like it was yesterday. But you ain't mad raps evolved, cus you fuck with the new shit, cus back then "this was the new shit". You were at home thinking, "How can I rap like that?"

New Music Video: Notes to Self - Today (I Wanna)

New true-school hip hop dopeness from Notes to Self! Banging beat, lovely vocals by Lee Gaul, and dope verses from all MCs:

When the stars align and creativity is at its height, magic happens - believe it or not, it can also be predetermined.

Ever just borrow a camera and shoot a video for a joint that wasn't finished yet, solely off the goosebumps that those very first 16 bars gave you? And before that 16 is even written, that 16 is inspired by a beat that is made in 10 minutes while en route to the session waiting for that 16? Flipped in mere minutes from the energy a soulful voice a friend introduces to you only hours before? That same voice winding up on the hook because it was destined to, because you couldn't get that soulful voice out of your head? A feeling from a beat so powerful, that the same Dude that writes the first 16 to that beat, is also incredibly compelled to write a hook too, on the spot? Who's then convinced, that this is "thee" tune and writes his own 16, forcing the other to? Plays it for the only remaining Homie, who then loses his shit so much that he turns on the Organ, unintentionally finishing the joint together? Has that ever happened to you?

Well, it happened to us, Today.

THE CYPHER feat. Citizen Kane + Fresco P

After an action packed summer that included a road-trip to Chicago, a J-Live show in Toronto, and numerous block parties around the city, THE CYPHER is back at Augusta House...

This month, we're proud to present special features:

CITIZEN KANE
http://www.myspace.com/citizenkanespade

citizen: striving to live an honest and meaningful life kane: child of sin, ancestor of man. The force embodied in CITIZEN KANE: Spade, represents the daily struggle to balance the good and bad from within ones inner self. Each track that CITIZEN KANE slams out melds these two dynamics and it is precisely because of this fusion that CITIZEN KANE is became a force to be reckoned with in the hip-hop world. A long time members of the Toronto hip-hop scene for the past 15 years, CITIZEN KANE has been steadily building foundations and has emerged as one of the leading rap groups in Canadian history. Deliverance was nominated for Best Rap Recording at the 1999 and 2000 Juno Awards. THE EPIC was nominated as Best Hip-Hop Album or EP at the Canadian Urban Music Awards in 1998. The National Film Board of Canada produced a Rapumentary featuring CITIZEN KANE titled Raisin Kane. This film was awarded best Canadian documentary at the Reel World Film Festival, won the HBO Best Documentary award in New Yorks Urban World Film Festival and others around the world. With their insightful lyrics, intricate rhyme structures and unique samples, CITIZEN KANE is one of the most respected acts in the Canadian hip-hop scene. Much like the film Citizen Kane, which was deemed a movie well ahead of its time and an epic to this day, CITIZEN KANE aspires to leave a similar impression on the rap world.

OFFICIAL WEBSITE:

Hip Hop culture manifests through the creative self-expression of individuals who embody its spirit in their respective art forms. This power of spontaneous creativity, the unification of a community for the great purpose that is Hip Hop, happens at The Cypher.

Artists sign up to take part in group performances called cyphers, in which each performer takes a few minutes on the mic and then passes it on to the next performer. All performances occur over music supplied by a live DJ, beat boxer, or producer. There are also a few spots at The Cypher reserved for featured artists to perform their own sets.

The Cypher is a grassroots hip hop event started by MC FÜBB, DJ Combo and the Hip Hop Headz (H3) community in downtown Toronto in the summer of 2009. The Cypher is an opportunity for various members of the hip hop community to perform, network, build community and have fun.
